Sept 9 was a very critical day for Mau- noury. The Germans had been marching un- ceasingly for five weeks, they had fought numerous battles, and lacked munitions and even more, food. Yet, in irresistible assaults, they had the force to throw the French back at all points. Instead of yielding, they com- pelled the French to yield ; instead of being outflanked, they outflanked the French, and even captured Nanteuil-le-Haudouin.
